5 card Omaha poker is an exciting little game derived from an all-time favourite poker game - Omaha card game. Each player is dealt five private cards, known as hole or pocket cards that belong only to that player. After the hole cards are dealt, five community cards are dealt face-up on the table. In 5 card Omaha, every player has to use exactly three of the community cards along with two hole or pocket cards to make the best five-card poker hand. No more, no less.

Let's begin by understanding the basics of Omaha card game.

Basics of the Omaha Card Game

In PLO Omaha, the poker tournaments online are referred according to the size of the blinds. Each player is dealt 5 pocket cards and thus begins the betting rounds. The rounds of betting begin clockwise, starting with the player at the left side of the big blind.

1. Pre-Flop

After seeing the hole cards, each player now has three options, to call, raise, or fold. The betting begins from the left side of the big blind and this round ends once each player has acted.

2. The Flop

After the first round of betting is complete, the Flop is dealt face-up on the table. Flop is the first of the three community cards available to all the players on the table. The second round of betting begins after the flop is dealt.

3. The Turn

When every player has acted on the Flop, the second round ends, and the Turn is dealt, face-up on the table. The Turn is the fourth community cards in the 5 Card Omaha game. The third round of betting begins and every player gets a chance to call, raise, or fold.

4. The River

After every player has acted, the third round of betting ends and the River is dealt, face-up on the table. The river is the fifth and the final community card dealt in the game. The final betting round begins.

5. The Showdown

If there is more than one player remaining after the final betting round, the last person to bet or raise shows their hand unless there was no bet in the final round. In such a case, the player immediately clockwise to the button shows their hand first. The player who possesses the best five-card hand wins the pot.

Variants of 5 Card Omaha

The rule of this Omaha Card Game remains the same for Pot Limit and No Limit poker games, with a few exceptions:-

  • Pot-limit Omaha

The minimum bet in Pot Limit 5 Card Omaha is exactly the same as the big blind, but the players can always bet up to the size of the pot. On the other hand, the maximum raise has to be at least as much as the previous bet or raise in the same round. Another important difference, in Pot Limit, there is no cap on the number of raises allowed.

  • No-limit Omaha

The minimum bet in No Limit Omaha Card Game is the same as that of the big bling but, the players can always bet as much as they want. Similar to Pot-Limit Omaha, the maximum raise has to be at least as much as the previous bet or raise on the same round. Another similarity between the two is there is no cap on the number of raises allowed in No Limit Omaha as well.
